Have you recently bought a brand new Netgear router but still getting poor upload speed? Wondering why so? Well, we have found the culprit, i.e. a little-used setting dubbed QoS. This setting is meant to prioritize network traffic but in reality, it often misidentifies devices, slows down important connections, and hampers upload speeds.
Despite the fact that the Quality of Service (QoS) can empirically be good for congested networks, it can also create more issues than it solves. So it is better to disable it after the Netgear router setup.
What is QoS?
Abbreviated as QoS, the Quality of Service is a built-in feature of Netgear WiFi routers. This feature prioritizes traffic so that only the important traffic can bypass first. It makes use of algorithms to figure out which services require priority on a network and then delivers varying internet speeds, on the basis of what it finds.
Let's say, you have connected a wireless printer and a gaming console to your Netgear router. In this case, as per QoS, a wireless printer is not as urgent as playing an online game or streaming video on a tablet. So, QoS automatically puts the stopper on the printer's bandwidth while providing more data to the devices in use.
Depending on users' feedback, the Quality of Service (QoS) doesn't work that well. When users do a Google search for 'Netgear QoS', around 4 out of 10 results are showing complaints about the service. And search for 'Netgear R7000 slow uploads' shows that QoS is the culprit.
Some users complained that the QoS is good at prioritizing the network traffic but at times, it just keeps on transferring the traffic from the dead PC. Other users said that this feature gives lower priority to wired data over the wireless. Streaming and gaming apps always take more priority over productivity files. Therefore, it is evidently an issue for all those folks who wish to use their network for entertainment and work both. Some users also complaining about QoS issues after Netgear N300 setup.
Even Netgear itself doesn't recommend to turn on QoS at high speeds more than 300 Mbps. It is a useless function for users who yearn for speed, not for the priority of network on different devices.
How QoS Slows Down Upload Speed?
A little online research ends up with declaring Netgear's QoS as the culprit behind poor upload speeds. This feature is enabled by default.
As per a test, Netgear R7000 router delivered limited upload on the entire network up to 0.5 Mbps. Apart from limiting the network speed, it even brings the network to a halt. The 100 MB file that earlier takes around 16 seconds to upload is now taking 27 minutes with QoS enabled.
How to Turn Off QoS on Netgear Router?
Follow the below-mentioned steps to disable Netgear QoS feature on your WiFi router:
- Turn on your Netgear wireless router by plugging it into a wall socket.
- Connect it to a modem through an Ethernet cable.
- On your computer, pull up an internet browser as per your liking.
- Navigate to the Netgear router login portal using the default web URL or IP address.
- Log in to the router using your username and password.
- Once logged in, click on the QoS Setup option.
- Uncheck the box that says 'Turn internet access QoS on'.
- At last, click on the Apply button to save the changes.
